Gastric Band

The adjustable gastric band is a silicone ring with an inflatable chamber inside, which is connected to a device that allows its internal diameter to be modified.

By creating a small and narrow stomach (approximately 100 ml), the patient is only able to consume a small amount of food, as it promotes satiety. Additionally, with the “bridge,” food is not fully absorbed, leading to weight loss.

It is a metabolic procedure, meaning it causes a beneficial hormonal change, as it increases other hormones that boost metabolism. This procedure has a very high success rate and also has a very favorable effect on diabetic patients.

The adjustable gastric band is placed at the upper part of the stomach, reducing the stomach’s capacity to receive food. With an intake of less than 50 cc, the patient experiences a significant feeling of fullness and satisfaction. This sense of fullness and satisfaction helps the patient adhere to their dietary program. Thus, it is a restrictive method for the treatment of obesity.

The adjustable gastric band is indicated for patients with morbid obesity (BMI over 40) or severe obesity (BMI between 35 and 39), especially when associated conditions are present that are expected to improve with the weight loss achieved.

Recently, the procedure has also been applied to patients with a BMI between 37 and 39, even without associated diseases, as long as the patient desires it and there are no contraindications. This is due to the low complication rate and the rapid recovery from the surgery.

The patient can expect to lose 55% to 60% of their excess weight, although it may be more, depending on the individual.

Half of this weight loss occurs in the first 6 months, and the rest over the next 12 to 18 months.

The weight loss is permanent, as long as the patient maintains the new dietary habits.
